The AWWA Ayoka Project arose in 1982 as the result of discussions by a group of African women about the problems facing the African community at large and African women in general.

The aim of the organisation is to work with African families, especially women and children in order to give advice, information and support on a range of issues including education, health, domestic violence, immigration, housing, employment etc. around the philosophy of promoting equality of opportunity and assistance in overcoming social disadvantage.

A successful project they established is the Tower Hamlets Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia Centre. Running from the same address, the centre produces a wide range of informative publications and organises meetings, seminars and conferences. The centre also works to make referalls and recommendations to other organisations.
