  Conferences and Events

Throughout its history BWHAFS has consistently worked to organise conferences, seminars, workshops and events both in London and Somaliland, in an attempt to raise awareness of the various issues that we deal with as an organisation.

Our events function to celebrate African and Somali culture and give the opportunity to our clients from these communities to enjoy and be proud of their cultural background.

The conferences are intended to create a forum for discussion in order to initiate and prompt their exchange of ideas and develop strategies that will help combat FGM and other associated problems faced by practising communities. Participants at these conferences range from FGM practitioners to women who have undergone the practice, to lobbyists working at local, statutory, parliamentary and international levels.

Attendance by members of local communities is always seen as crucial in the planning of our conferences in order develop culturally appropriate strategies and avoid top-down policy implementation. The work BWHAFS has done with young people has also lead to a collaborative conference with Social Services which investigated problems faced by Somali youth (Somali Youth at the Margins).

Community workshops and seminars are held in order to raise awareness of FGM, sexual health and other health related issues within a specifically Somali context. Participants at these are primarily Somali, although we have held a number of seminars and workshops for professionals and for other women's organisations. (For further information on workshops and seminars see Health Sessions and Outreach & Development).

Attendance at conferences and seminars is a key aspect of BWHAFS's work. Participation through observation, discussion and speech making, establishes and reinforces networks with other individuals and groups creating a solidarity and validity that strengthens the fight against FGM and the work for the improvement of women's health.
