  Karin Housing

Karin Housing Association is situated in East London, and was established as Karin Housing Co-operative in 1988 by Black Women's Health and Family Support (then London Black Women's Health Action Project) in order to provide safe and satisfactory housing for single parent, homeless and refugee women. It became a housing association in 1994.

Karin Housing Association is unique in that it is the only housing association that provides specifically for Somali refugees. No other association has Somali workers, and Karin is often asked to assist colleagues in Somali cases.

 Aims and Objectives

Karin Housing Association aims to provide an advice and advocacy service for the whole Somali community, especially refugees, and to house primarily Somali women. Karin aims to become an umbrella organisation serving the housing and social welfare needs of the Somali community throughout London.

Their mission will be achieved by:

- Providing housing for Somali people in need in London
- Providing advice and assistance for tenants, refugees and asylum seekers about the services available to them
- Encouraging client participation and involvement in Karin
- Ensuring staff have the skills and knowledge to carry out their duties efficiently and achieve Karin's targets and objectives
- Ensuring adequate and effective systems and procedures are in place

Karin recognises the importance in service delivery of:

- A culturally sensitive approach
- Confidentiality and privacy
- Accessibility to all members of the community
- Publicity of the services in both Somali and English

Karin's services are client led:

- Clients enquiries must be answered on time and to standards specified
- Clients needs are researched and this research is used to improve the service
- Improvements are communicated to clients in a straightforward and clear manner
