  Women's Health and Family Services

Women's Health and Family Services was established in 1981 as Maternity Services Liaison Scheme (MSLS) by a group of women from East London, including Shamis Dirir. The original aim was to enable access to maternity services by ethnic minority women who do not speak English as their first language. This was a response to the distress experienced by women from the local Bengali and Somali communities when trying to access maternity services in Tower Hamlets, and the sometimes poor quality of health care they received, in particular post-natal and ante-natal care.

One of the largest projects set up by the organisation has been the Infant Feeding Project, established in 1988 in the Spitalfields area. However, since then many other projects have been organised. (too vague)

In 1994 the name of the organisation was changed to Women's Health and Family Services to reflect the ongoing expansion and changes in the organisation and its work. As well as maternal health, services now include wide ranging health advocacy work within local health centres and hospitals, and several health and literacy-related education and social groups. The organisation works in particular to serve women from Bangladeshi, Somali, Vietnamese and Chinese backgrounds.

The goal of WHFS - to empower women to preserve and protect their health and well being - accords with that of Black Women's Health and Family Support, and the two organisations have continuously worked in partnership.
